![]() But what makes them such an effective creative team? Why is there almost something magical about their works? They’ll get you hooked, and you’ll spend the rest of your days waiting for Brubaker’s Substack newsletter announcing their next project. That’s how good writer Brubaker and artist Phillips are. In fact, despite the size of the stack next to me, I can’t help but think about the comics they’ve done that I don’t have. Many would tell you that these two are the kings of noir comics. Those names are Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. These comics cover a range of subjects: a vigilante in New York being hounded by a demon, a seedy crime world that no one seems to inhabit by choice, gritty superheroes, the underbelly of old Hollywood… But there are two names that tie all of these stories together. ![]() ![]() Volumes of Kill or be Killed, Criminal, Sleeper, and The Fade Out. ![]() Next to me, I have a stack of comics that’s about a foot high. ![]() ![]() But she is not a woman given to living her dreams. ![]() In fact, if you're like me, you wonder why she doesn't do it sooner. ![]() The devastatingly handsome Mick is so clever, sweet, and charming that you can understand why the genteel but rather impoverished heroine falls for him. Derek Craven in Dreaming of You, “Charming” Mickey O’Connor in Scandalous Desires, and Nick Gentry in Worth Any Price are now joined by Michael "Mick" Tremane, the Cornish/Cockney rat catcher who is the hero of this Pygmalion-inspired story. I have a weakness for lower-class blokes who are smart and savvy enough to work their way into the upper-class world. Let me just say that the team of author Judith Ivory and narrator Steven Crossley made me fall in love with a rat catcher. ![]() I listened to this wonderful audiobook last year and neglected to write a review. ![]() ![]() ![]() If asked why the Expedition failed to achieve its objectives, Cudahy would likely blame the British for mismanaging the entire campaign. This implies that he was likely present in Russia even though he was not a combatant himself. While these factors could suggest that Cudahy was never in Russia to begin with, he is able to talk at length about the soldiers themselves, as well as the ground conditions of the campaign. Lastly, while the other three primary accounts were published in Michigan where the majority of the American forces came from, Cudahy’s account was published in Chicago. Cudahy’s book also lacks eyewitness accounts of any battles that took place in Russia. This can be asserted since Cudahy never mentions his rank or branch of service in the U.S. ![]() John Cudahy, a man who identifies himself as a “chronicler,” and not as a soldier was one of these men. ![]() Performance – 5/5 These are an extremely well narrated series of books, and you can tell a lot of effort has gone into it to create the best experience for the listener. You will probably make your own decision on it, but if you are on the fence like I was, give the first one a try – you can always return it if you didn’t feel it was worth it. The stories may seem very short, and therefore not worth the credits, but I personally found them worth it. ![]() It was enough of an ending for me not to rush into the latter 5 books in the series (which are based on Corwin’s son Merlin), but I will definitely be returning to complete the series very soon.
